As we may have mentioned, we get a little excited around awards season, and one of our favorite things to do is debate dresses. Below, see the dresses most beloved by PEOPLE StyleWatch editors — and be sure to check out our picks for the ones we could have done without. And don’t forget to check out all the links below to catch up on our must-see beauty looks, gown roundup, all the news from the night and much more.

Andrea Lavinthal, Beauty and Style Director: You’re not going to believe me, but I totally picked out this dress for Kate Mara. Where’s my proof? On the cutting room floor after editing our predict-a-gown video. I swear! The minute I saw this slinky J. Mendel gown on the designer’s runway, with its architectural cap sleeve, gathered waistline, sheer skirt and seriously plunging neckline, I made a note that it would look gorgeous on Kate Mara. A brunette Kate Mara, since cool tones typically work best with dark hair. But the newly-blonde star pulled off the silver hue beautifully and, um, filled out the middle quite nicely.

Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: The star of 12 Years a Slave, Lupita Nyong’o has long been on our “one to watch” style shortlist. So I wasn’t surprised when the actress stepped onto the carpet just as the night began — and I immediately knew that no one else was going to top her all night. Her Ralph Lauren Collection gown was the perfect shade for her skin tone, the perfect shape for her figure and the perfect look to make a major impact. She added understated gold-and-diamond Fred Leighton studs and a few massive vintage Fred Leighton diamond rings, then let her striking cat eye add a little drama to the otherwise clean and simple look. She not only shut the competition down for the entire Golden Globes, she might have done it for the rest of the year — you’ll be seeing this dress topping “Best Of” lists in December.

Brittany Talarico, Associate Editor: Forget the gowns. Emma Watson opened a whole new style door at this year’s Globes in a pair of pants and double-slit floor-skimming top by Dior Haute Couture. Not only did she radiate confidence, but she totally commanded attention on the carpet. (Or at least my attention.) Plus, I love the sexy open back detail on the design and that she paired it with one gold Dior earring. I don’t know who can top this at the SAGs next week.

Zoë Ruderman, Senior Style Editor: I knew someone would wear this strapless Zuhair Murad stunner sometime during the 2014 awards season. I just thought it would be me (or Jennifer Lopez) at the Grammys later this month. But Kate Beckinsale beat us to the metallic gown. And while I’m still mad at her, I have to admit the actress looks really amazing in the dress, especially with her signature perky pony, which really shows off the neckline and those black-and-white Chopard earrings.
