Besides seeing the hottest actors accept golden popcorn statues, you can always rely on the MTV Movie Awards for something else: the sexiest and most unconventional fashion choices.
While ‘lots of leg’ was a recurring theme on Sunday night’s red carpet, it was rather covered up compared to years past — though that’s not to say that the stars played it safe. We spotted two trends that — thanks to last night’s popularity — have officially become red carpet staples, and one that was totally unexpected.
Sexy menswear-inspired looks. Descendants star Shailene Woodley (left) skipped the expected mini-dress and instead opted for a Stella McCartney vest and pants. Her plunging top was a sexy twist on the menswear trend and a chic departure from the staid blazer. Janelle Monae also decided to leave the dress at home and wear something inspired by the boys.
Peplum. It’s official: it’s here to stay. Charlize Theron (center) went classic with the trend in her elegant red Lanvin sheath; Julianne Hough (in Sally LaPointe) bared her midriff while rocking the extra fabric. Jenna Dewan-Tatum even donned a mini-peplum Lublu dress.
Sculptural cocktail dresses. Since it’s summer, we expected to see all of our favorite stars in flirty floral minis, but it was actually quite the opposite. Sculptural and graphic frocks ruled the carpet. Our style crush Emma Stone (right) wore an ivory bubble skirt offset with a rigid black top. Other stars who went futuristic with their high hemlines? Jessica Biel in a textured white mini with dramatic sleeves and Emma Watson (in Brood), who went graphic with her dress’s shape and print.
What stood out to you? And who was your favorite trend-setter on the red carpet?
